On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the New York Observer—a weekly must-read of the city's media and culture set—published its list of "The 100 Most Influential New Yorkers of the Past 25 Years." On it? A lot of the usual suspects—Andy Warhol, Jon Stewart, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Robert De Niro, Larry Gagosian, Derek Jeter—and plenty of fashion folks.
According to the Observer, the nine most influential fashion people in New York over the last 25 years have been—drumroll please—designers Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, and Vera Wang, fashion critic Cathy Horyn, editor Anna Wintour, J. Crew boss-lady Jenna Lyons, and Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren.
Elsewhere on the list, you'll find some other familiar fashion names—including fashion-social Tinsley Mortimer, social scribe Derek Blasberg, and Moda Operandi founder Lauren Santo Domingo (all three are listed under "Society"); former Cosmopolitan
EIC Helen Gurley Brown (listed under "Media"); Revlon man Ron Perelman
(under "Business"); and even one fictional character, Carrie Bradshaw
(under "City Life")—"We’d venture that no woman, real or fictional, has
lured more single girls to seek love and fortune in New York than Carrie
