Movie: "Titanic" starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio (1997)
The Diamonds: In "Titanic," a steel tycoon (Billy Zane) gives his fiancé
Rose DeWitt Bukater (Winslet) a blue diamond necklace, dubbed "Heart of
the Ocean," as an engagement gift. In the film, the story of the
necklace is as follows: The diamond was said to have originally belonged
to King Louis XVI, and it was later shaped into a heart after the
French Revolution. At the end of the film, an elderly Rose throws the
necklace into the ocean. A replica of the necklace was made by Asprey
London, and made of blue quartz, a cheaper stone. The jeweler also made a
version composed of a single 170-carat sapphire and 65
diamonds-totaling 30 carats. The sapphire necklace was sold at a charity
auction for Princess Diana's Memorial fund for $2,200,000, and loaned
to Celine Dion for her performance of "Titanic's" theme song at the 1998
Academy Awards.
